What are the requirements?
Students begin their MPH course of study in either the junior or senior year, depending on when they applied to the program. Once accepted, dual degree candidates must complete four MPH graduate level courses as undergraduates, Principles of Epidemiology (CE 154) and three other MPH graduate level courses picked in consultation with the Bachelor/MPH advisor. Two of the four courses count toward both Bachelor and MPH degrees; the remaining two count only towards the MPH degree. These second two courses may not count towards any undergraduate requirement. Thus, during their undergraduate years Bachelor/MPH students must take two courses above the minimum required to obtain their undergraduate degree. Students must also complete a field experience in the area of health and/or human services before matriculating into MPH graduate program.
Completion of the MPH degree requires that students demonstrate a basic competence in public health biology, and it is strongly encouraged that they meet this competence by completing at least one semester of biology as an undergraduate. Although not required, it is also strongly recommended that students take Community Health 1 or 2.
What courses do I need to take?
Students must complete all MPH core course requirements: one course each in the five core knowledge areas as well as one research methods course, one course on health care budgeting and management and the Applied Learning Experience (ALE). The ALE requires students to synthesize knowledge acquired in coursework and apply it to a public health project of their own design involving at least 160 hours of practicum work. Remaining course credits are earned through completion of concentration specific requirements and additional electives. A total of 42 credits, nine of which are earned after completion of the Bachelor degree, are required.
Additionally, MPH students must complete a mandatory Career Planning Course (CPC) which is designed to ensure that students gain the skills and confidence to promote themselves effectively in job searches and throughout their careers. Learn more about the CPC.
How do I apply?
Students can apply for the Bachelor’s/MPH dual degree program no earlier than their sophomore year, and no later than July 15th of their senior year. Junior and senior year applicants are urged to seek academic advising as early as possible. In unusual cases, a later application will be considered. Students are not required to submit an application fee or GRE scores.
This program is only open to Tufts undergraduates.

College Biology, or its equivalent, is a prerequisite to graduate from our MPH program. Students who do not have this will normally be expected to take such a course by the end of their first fall semester. As Tufts MPH students, they can satisfy this requirement by taking our 0.5 credit Public Health Biology course offered each fall. Enrolling at another college or university to take an undergraduate level biology course before the end of their first fall semester with us is also acceptable.

Your personal statement is intended to give you the opportunity to submit a narrative describing your past education, experience, and current professional career objectives. Your statement should describe your:
- reasons for interest in public health,
- reasons for interest in the Public Health and Professional Degree programs at Tufts University, and
- career goals
Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required.
- Recommendation letters may be submitted online (within the application) or by mail.
- Letters should be primarily academic in nature, and should mention the relationship of the applicant to the recommender so that their observations can be put into the proper context.
- Electronically submitted recommendations do not need to be followed up with paper recommendations.
- If mailed, letters of recommendation should be in a sealed envelope with the author’s signature across the seal and forwarded by you or the recommender to our address below.
- Copies of ALL undergraduate and graduate transcripts (e.g., EMT courses, study abroad, summer courses, post-bacc) are required for review.
- We accept both unofficial and official transcripts. Generally, your application will be processed sooner if you upload unofficial transcripts; this is also our preference. However, please note that if you decide to matriculate, you will be required to provide a final official transcript, with a date of undergraduate degree conferral, from Tufts University.
If you’re uploading an unofficial transcript to your application:
- Copy/scan/screenshot your transcripts for each college/university attended.
- Upload all pages of your transcript(s) and one example of the back page to provide us with your university’s transcript key. This can be found on the back of your official transcript or on your registrar’s website.
- PDF files are preferred but additional formats are accepted (e.g., .doc, .jpg,.tiff).
- Scanned documents must be clearly legible and on standard US 8.5” x 11” paper. Be sure no text is cut off when scanned
If you are sending official transcripts from your college or university:
- Don’t upload anything in the transcripts section if you’re sending an official transcript. The system will inaccurately count this as your transcript, and review of your application will be delayed.
- Official transcripts may be mailed via the US Mail to our address at the bottom of this page, or electronically to email@example.com.
- Transcripts are only considered official if they are sent directly from the registrar's office of your institution to our office in a sealed envelope. If you scan your official transcript to your application it becomes unofficial.
Please note the following:
- If you received two degrees from the same institution that are on the same transcript, you will need to add the institution twice, one for each degree. Upload the transcript with one degree and for the other, upload a blank document. If you leave either transcript section empty, your application will be left as incomplete.
- If you have any courses that are in progress or being completed in a future term, please provide documentation of this (e.g., a transcript that shows courses in progress).

What kind of job can I get with these degrees?
The MPH provides entry into several kinds of careers. Core courses give students foundational knowledge in public health, while concentration requirements and the ALE provide a focus in a particular public health field. Graduates go on to positions in data collection and analysis, program development and/or evaluation for community health projects, research, policy making or creating health communication campaigns. Public health work is found in all market sectors, with opportunities available in organizations working at the local, national and international level.
