Matriculated Students

Online registration is conducted through SIS, the university's Student Information System. View detailed instructions on how to register in SIS.

Prepare for Online Registration 

Registration dates for each term are determined by the Registrar’s Office and announced to students via email. Registration deadlines are included in the Academic Calendar

  • You can review holds on SIS and follow the instructions to clear them. You will not be able to register until your holds are resolved.

  •  Refer to “My Advisement Report” on your SIS home page, the program brochure, and/or the degree requirement worksheet.

    Your advisor is listed on the SIS home page on the left side of the screen. Look for the “Academics” box.

  • The course listings are now available in SIS via the Class Search functionality or on the MPH Student Resources website. 

Class Registration Changes for MPH or HIA Courses after Classes Begin

  • Students may add and drop courses from their schedule without additional permission through SIS.

  • Students may add a course after the add/drop period ends with permission from both the course instructor and the Bursar’s Office.

    Students should submit an Add/Drop Form with signatures from both the instructor and the Bursar’s Office to the Registrar’s Office via email from their Tufts.edu account (preferred) or in-person.

  • After the add/drop period ends, students may no longer drop a course. Instead, they must request a Course Withdrawal form from the Registrar’s Office and submit the completed form before the deadlines listed on the Academic Calendar. 

    Withdrawing from a course will result in the loss of part or all of the tuition payment for that course. Please refer to the Tuition Refund Policy in the Tuition and Fees section of the Student Handbook. The course is given a “W” grade, which shows on the student’s transcript but does not affect the GPA. Note: Withdrawing from a course may affect your financial aid eligibility. Review the Satisfactory Academic Progress section of the Student Handbook for more details.

    International students considering withdrawing from a course must contact the International Center before submitting the form to ensure the course withdrawal does not affect their visa status.

Leave of Absence

MPH and HIA students are required to enroll in at least one course in the Fall and Spring semester in order to remain active students. Students who do not plan to enroll or who need to leave the program after the semester has started must take a Leave of Absence. 

Students interested in a Leave of Absence should contact their Program Director to discuss their plan and complete the Leave of Absence form

Cross-Registration

Students have the option to cross-register in courses outside of their program, including cross-format (online/on-campus) registration, cross-registration at other schools within Tufts, and participating in the Boston Consortium partnership with Brandeis University, Boston College, and Boston University.

  • In addition to courses offered within a student’s official format of study (i.e. online or on campus), students may take graduate-level PH or HIA courses offered in other formats (i.e. on-campus courses for online students, online courses for on-campus students). Information on any deadlines for cross-registration is sent out by the Registrar’s Office to students’ Tufts email addresses each semester.

    The cross-registration process is completed through SIS. Detailed instructions on this process are available online.

    Important Note for International Students: Be sure to contact the International Center to confirm that online courses are allowed under your visa requirements.

  • Students may cross-register for graduate courses offered by other schools within Tufts University (i.e. School of Arts and Sciences, Friedman School of Nutrition Sciences and Policy, etc.). Eligible courses can be requested through the Cross-Registration feature in SIS

    Students are encouraged to confirm with their advisors prior to submitting a cross-registration request that the course is eligible to count toward their degree requirements. Cross-registration requests for courses that will not count toward the MPH/HIA degree will be denied.

    Once a Cross-Registration request is fully approved, the Registrar’s Office will complete the registration for the student.

    Please note, not all courses and not all schools within Tufts University allow cross-registration.

    Cross-registration is on a space-available basis and at the discretion of the Registrar’s Office of the host institution. 

    The academic calendar and start dates of courses at other institutions and at other schools within Tufts University are frequently different, and it is the responsibility of the student to obtain this information and adhere to these schedules. 

    Students will be held to the add/drop and withdrawal deadlines and rules for TUSMGP, regardless of the rules and deadlines of the host institution.

  • A consortium agreement with Brandeis University, Boston College, and Boston University allows eligible students to register for Fall and Spring semester graduate courses offered by these institutions.

    Consortium courses are not available during the summer semester.

    Students may register for a maximum of 6 credits through the Boston Consortium. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the Registrar’s Office of the host institution for registration details. Please note, host institutions may limit TUSMGP students to one cross- registered course per semester.

    Our students are encouraged to review the available public health courses at each of these institutions and work with their advisors to determine if a course they are interested in is eligible to count toward their degree.

    Process for TUSMGP Students:

    1. Review the course listings at the Consortium institution for available courses. 
    2. Confirm with the Registrar’s Office at the Consortium institution that cross-registration is allowed in the course you are interested in.
    3. Contact your Academic Advisor to confirm the course is approved to fulfill a degree requirement. 
    4. Complete the Boston Consortium Cross-Registration Request Form, including gathering all required signatures.
    5. Submit the form to the to the TUSMGP Registrar’s Office from your Tufts.edu email account.

    Process for Consortium Students Interested in TUSMGP Courses:

    1. Review the course listings in SIS via the Class Search functionality. Look for courses with “PH” as the subject.
    2. Contact your home Registrar’s Office for their cross-registration form and to learn of any applicable policies/deadlines.
    3. Contact the instructor for the course and request that they email the TUSMGP Registrar’s Office with their approval for you to cross-register in the course.
    4. Submit the completed cross-registration form from your home institution to the TUSMGP Registrar’s Office from your university email account. Be sure to follow any additional instructions our office sends.
    5. Once instructor approval and any additional information is received and cross-registration in our courses has opened, our office will confirm a seat is available and register you for the course at Tufts. We’ll then sign off on your Home Registrar’s Office’s form.
    6. Return the completed form to your Home Registrar’s Office so they can complete registration with them.

    Tuition: 

    Tuition for Consortium courses is the same as normal tuition at your home institution. All billing goes through your home institution and follows their policies.

Non-Matriculated Students
