Public Health Thematic Research Areas

In addition to their teaching, faculty in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine engage in a wide range of research activities related to the health of populations.  There are seven broad areas of research that comprise the work of faculty:

Environmental and Occupational Health, which examines the ways in which work, the ambient environment, and the built environment cause injury, illness, disability, and premature death and how these adverse health outcomes can be prevented.

Center for Global Public Health, researching infectious and chronic diseases, water and development, nutrition and health as well as methods for integrating research findings and evidence into healthcare policy and practice.  The Tufts Center for Global Public Health coordinates current research and helps identify future research and translation of findings into policies and programs. The center is dedicated to operations research and implementations science

Health Communication, combining methods and theoretical approaches from communication, public health, education, psychology, and technology fields to identify and/or develop best practices for communicating health information effectively to a wide range of audiences.

Health Inequality and Social Determinants of Health, looking to better understand the social and behavioral determinants of health, as well as the mechanism and processes by which these factors  lead to premature death, excess morbidity, poorer quality of life, and overall disparate health outcomes among disenfranchised and marginalized segments of the U.S.

Health Policy and Health Care Delivery, focusing on health policy and the delivery and financing of health care services, primarily in the United States.  The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and payment reform are among the group's most current research.

Nutrition and Infection Unit, which addresses nutritional and metabolic aspects of infectious diseases with an emphasis on HIV/AIDS in the U.S. and internationally; other areas of focus include diarrheal disease, tuberculosis, growth faltering and probiotics.

Obesity and Chronic Disease, which includes uses  sociology, economics  and  health policy perspectives in conducting  basic and applied research on the epidemiology of obesity across the lifespan, its association with chronic disease and community-based interventions with vulnerable populations.
