Immunization Requirements

Any student matriculating into Tufts University Public Health and Professional Degree Programs must provide documentation for the State and University immunization requirements listed below, by the given immunization deadline (or immediately following acceptance if the offer is made after the deadline).  An Immunization Form and additional information with your immunization deadline will be sent upon receipt of your enrollment deposit (if applicable) and your candidate reply form.  You will not be registered or able to attend class if you are not in compliance with the listed State and University immunization requirements.

It is best to start gathering your documentation early, as it may take several weeks to retrieve immunization records, and you might need an appointment for additional immunizations and testing.  If you are currently enrolled in college, you should retrieve immunization documentation from your health services clinic prior to graduation.  If it is impossible to obtain documentation of past immunizations, you must be vaccinated again, or provide a positive antibody titer as proof of immunity. The following immunizations are required as a condition of matriculation:

  • Tetanus Diphtheria Acellular Pertussis (Tdap):  One dose of the adult Tdap vaccine, unless current Td booster is less than two years old.  If current Td booster is less than two years old, wait to receive the Tdap vaccine.
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR):

MBS, HC, MPH, DrPH, DRMD and PREP Students:  two doses of MMR vaccine or positive antibody titers.

PA Students:  two doses of MMR vaccine and a positive rubella antibody titer required, or positive antibody titers for measles, mumps and rubella.

Must attach laboratory report with antibody titer date and result.

  • Tuberculosis Test:

MBS, HC, MPH, DrPH, DRMD and PREP Students:  Required within one year prior to start date.

PA Students:  Required within one year prior to start date and required annually   thereafter.

For all students, if tuberculin positive, a chest X-Ray or QuantiFERON-TB Gold Test is required within one year prior to start date.  If history of being tuberculin positive, documentation of past positive test is required.  A history of BCG vaccine is not acceptable as proof of being tuberculin positive.  BCG recipients must provide documentation of a tuberculosis test.

  • Varicella (chickenpox):  Year of disease, positive antibody titer, or two doses of vaccine.
  • Hepatitis B:

MBS, HC, MPH, DrPH, DRMD and PREP: 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine or positive antibody titer.

PA Students: Positive antibody titer required.  Dates of immunization should be recorded, but will not substitute for antibody titer.

Must attach laboratory report with antibody titer date and result.

  • Meningococcal:  One dose of vaccine within the five years prior to start date, or completion of State Waiver Form
  • Influenza: Annual Seasonal Influenza vaccine required for all students with patient contact, unless medically contraindicated.   Strongly recommended for all others.
