Faculty and Leadership

The Tufts University School of Medicine Physician Assistant (TUSM PA) Program is led by clinicians with a long tradition of patient care experience, both in primary care and specialized areas of practice. They also have outstanding histories as educators of physician assistants, in the classroom and in clinic settings. Each course in the first year is led by a physician, physician assistant, or professional educator, all chosen for their excellence in teaching and experience in the field.

Richard Murphy, PA Program Director
Richard E. Murphy, PA-C, MBA
Program Director

In addition to being the PA Program Director, he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Public Health, Community Medicine and Surgery at TUSM. He is also a Senior Physician Assistant at Tufts Medical Center's Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He obtained his PA education and an MBA from Northeastern University and a bachelor's degree from Fairfield University. An editorial board member of Clinician Reviews, he is also a frequent contributor to peer-reviewed journals.

Jeanine Carlson
Jeanine A. Carlson, MD
Medical Director

Dr. Jeanine Carlson has been practicing internal medicine for over 25 years. She earned her BA at the University of Chicago and her MD at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Montefiore Hospital in New York, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Tufts Medical Center. She is board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology. Dr. Carlson is an Associate Professor of Medicine at TUSM and an Assistant Attending Physician in Medicine at Tufts Medical Center. Since 1987, she has also been an adjunct faculty member for Northeastern University's Masters in Science in Physician Assistant Studies.

Beth Buyea, MHS, PA-C
Director of Didactic Education

Assistant Professor Buyea is the Director of Didactic Education. She received her Master of Health Science and PA education from Quinnipiac University and a Bachelor of Science from Syracuse University. Her clinical focus has been in family practice, most recently focusing on adolescent care. Before joining Tufts, she worked as an assistant professor at MCPHS University. She continues to work as a physician assistant for Synergy Health Care in Amesbury, MA and Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.


Joseph Sansone, PA Program Clinical Coordinator
Joseph Sansone, PA-C, MS
Director of Clinical Education

Assistant Professor Sansone is the Director of Clinical Education. He received his Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Northeastern University and a bachelor's degree from Bowdoin College. He has precepted numerous physician assistant students in the Emergency Department. He continues to work as a staff physician assistant in the Emergency Department at Tufts Medical Center.

Mark Freedman, MHP, PA-C
Principal Faculty

Assistant Professor Freedman received his PA education and Masters of Health Professions from Northeastern University and his BS from the University of South Florida. He completed a residency in occupational medicine at the University of Cincinnati. His clinical focus is family and occupational medicine. He has been in clinical practice for over 40 years and has served on the faculty at Northeastern University, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences, and the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Robin Reed, MD

Principal Faculty

Assistant Professor Reed received her MD from New York University Medical School in NYC and her BA in Psychology from Stanford University in CA. She has been practicing in internal medicine for over 30 years, with a focus in primary care, integrative medicine, and women’s health, while providing care to the underserved including urban populations, homeless and prisoners moving toward re-entry into the community. Dr. Reed’s commitment to PA education is evident in her many years of service as a preceptor, and classroom instructor. She comes to Tufts from Northeastern University PA Program where she served as medical director and then program director.

Christine McCormack, Program manager PA program
Christina McCormack, MS, RD, LD
Program Manager

Ms. McCormack holds a Masters in Health Communication from Tufts University where she has also held several key management positions since 1994, including Project Manager & Research Nutritionist, and Research Program Manager coordinating new research projects at the university. She is also a Registered Dietitian.
