Director's Welcome

Welcome one and all to the online description of the Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program at Tufts University School of Medicine.

As a member of the faculty of the School of Medicine for more than 36 years, I am delighted and honored to serve as this program’s first Director. Together with my faculty and administration colleagues, we have worked thoughtfully and diligently to bring this exciting program to fruition. Since 1893, Tufts University has had a long legacy of being a leader in medical education and curriculum innovation. We are pleased to build our MBS program around this great tradition and to stand on the shoulders of excellence that is embodied in our School of Medicine. Just one example of these pervasive qualities is our award-winning electronic curriculum database called TUSK, the Tufts University Sciences Knowledgebase. This dynamic multimedia knowledge management system, which provides a portal to an integrated body of biomedical information, is used by all of our health sciences students. Currently, TUSK contains more than 1.5 million content items including medical images; videos and sound recordings; course schedules and syllabuses; practice examinations; clinical vignettes; case-based learning modules; personal notes; and much more. Thus, this exceptional tool not only facilitates student learning and training in the delivery of our basic and clinical sciences curricula, but it also supports faculty in their teaching and professional development.

The Tufts MBS program has been designed specifically to provide an outstanding experience and high-quality educational opportunity for students wishing to become stronger applicants to medical school or other biomedical fields. We recognize that admission to medical school is highly competitive and many qualified applicants are turned away. We are also cognizant of the national need for more physicians to be trained over the next several decades. Thus, one of our primary missions is to give our students the best possible preparation for successful admittance to the schools of their choice AND to achieve success in those programs.

The Tufts MBS program is a full-time experience that includes a thesis. Minimally, it can be completed in one year, but may be extended. In this regard, we have also made provisions for those candidates who wish to continue their studies leading to the MPH degree or MBA degree.

I now invite you to explore information about our MS in Biomedical Sciences program. In order to make your browsing experience as helpful and informative as possible, we have provided you with specific sections on the Curriculum (including MBS core curriculum, MPH concentration options, and elective courses), Faculty Profiles, Admissions information, Student Support Services, as well as Frequently Asked Questions. Thank you for your time and interest in our program. We hope you will join us and we look forward to your inquiries.
